Is it possible that in this day, it is now fashionable to be ironic?

It seems in the last couple of years, being alternative ( or which ever label or style you wish to place your self under ) has become so popular amongst teen’s and young adults. That by being alternative or attempting to be different from everyone else you are in fact conforming to society and becoming mainstream your self?
